Silent Auction bids close 2:00 PM on Sunday.

. . . and 100% of this money funds breast cancer clinical trials at Whittingham Cancer Center and patients in The Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital.  Last year some of the money was used to buy 10 iPads for patients to use in the chemo room.

Riders:
All bikes have toe cages and SPD.

If you have cycling shoes w/cleats for LOOK or non SPD,
you must supply your own pedals.

Put your name on your pedals (use masking tape & a sharpie) and bring them to pre-registration. Spin-O bike techs will change pedals.  Please do not change the pedals yourself. 

SPINODYSSEY 2012 FAQ FOR EVERYONE!


1. Where is the event? Parking? Directions?

INTENSITY 490 – 508 Westport Avenue, Norwalk, CT 

Spinning & Tennis in Tennis Building. 
All Fairway Market’s delicious food, drinks, vendors, SPIN-O Shop, Silent Auction, Sunday Registration & Coat Check are on Court 7 (former Ski Market) --- we call this SPINODYSSEY Village . . . and this is the main entrance!  Port – O - johns are near here!

Herman’s Workout, Zumba, Yoga are in the gorgeous new Studio I

in the front (on edge of Post Road) and Body Pump is in Studio III in  Fitness building (in back) next to Tennis building.  Please do not wear street shoes/sneakers in the Studio’s.

Parking:
Please use the parking lots at Hank Mays Goodyear or CarQuest Autoparts, directly behind Goodyear.  Please do not try to park at INTENSITY or Annie Sez.  Please use another parking lot.  Remember to give yourself enough time to walk.

2. What should I bring to Registration on Fri/Sat/Sun?

Pledge form or piece of paper listing checks & cash you collected.  Write down active.com total.  We do have the totals, too, from active.com.   Checks are payable to American Cancer Society.  Put this in an envelope with your name and total on the outside.  We will have special envelopes for this purpose or use your own envelope!
  • Corporate match gift forms (filled out & signed).
  • ALL donations (including checks) and match forms received on Sunday by 1PM and online donations posted on Active.com by Midnight 3/3 receive credit towards our top fundraising prizes!
On Sunday, bring:
  • Your name badge on the Webster Bank lanyard if you checked-in on Fri/Sat.

  • Water bottle and/or your own sports drink, if you want a specific kind.  We will have drinks available and there are filtered water fountains which we encourage you to use.

  • Cash, checks or credit cards to purchase items @ SPIN-O Shop,Silent Auction.

  • If your ride starts at 9AM and you need special pedals, please drop off your pedals by 4PM Saturday 3/3 at pre-reg.

  • Sunday come dressed in your cycling / fitness gear, and ready to participate!

3. When should I arrive on Sunday?

If you are participating at 9:00 AM and did not go to pre-reg on Fri./Sat.  please be at the registration tables no later than 8:00 AM in the SPIN-O Village.   Other 9:00 AM riders should be on their bikes by 8:30 AM.  Doors will open at 7:45 AM.  All riders should arrive at least 45 minutes before their ride time.  In addition, give yourself at least 15 minutes to walk from parking to the event.

SAME DAY fitness participants not registered
must register in the SPIN-O Village, too.  There is no registration in the Studio’s.  Please wear your name badge in the Studio to participate.

4. What should I do when I arrive on Sunday?

If you went to pre-registration, turn in any additional donation checks in an envelope at the Registration tables.  If you did not go to pre-registration, CHECK IN at the Registration tables.  Turn in your donations, checks & related forms and pick up your name badge.

Check your coat and any other items at coat check.  Space is very limited at the bikes or on the courts or studios, so please check your bags.  It is also unsafe for you to have bags at your bike or on the courts as other people may trip on them.   If you need something during the event, a volunteer can go and get it for you.  We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items from the coat check. 
Please do not check any valuables.

15 minutes before starting time please be ready to get to your bike. 
IF YOU START AT 9:00 AM, please be at your bike no later then 8:30 AM.

5. If I wear regular sneakers to ride, do I need to bring any pedals? 

No.  All bikes will have pedals with toe cages for those who ride using regular sneakers.

6. If I ride using bike shoes with SPD cleats, do I need to bring my pedals?

No, unless you use LOOKs or non spd!

7. If I am a top fundraiser, do I need to be present to select one of the top fundraising prizes?

Yes.  Either you must be present in person or someone you designate must be present.   The top fundraisers will be picking their own prizes from the choices available.   If you are not present, you will miss your turn to select your prize and you will be left with whatever top prizes were not picked.   The top fundraising prizes will be posted at the event.   The top fundraiser prize winners will be announced in the last hour of the event.  At 3:15p the top fundraisers are to meet at the SPINODYSSEY Shop where the Top Fundraiser prizes are located and Patty Kondub, Clair Mason, Chris Klimek, Judy Samuels of the SPIN-O Committee will facilitate the awards.

8. What if I need assistance at the event (i.e., more water)?

Volunteers will be available to assist you at the event.   Volunteers will be wearing Bright Pink or Washed-Out Brown SPINOdyssey T-shirts so feel free to ask them for help. 

9.  Will there be food and water at the event? Where can I eat the catered food?

YES.   We have a free breakfast & lunch from Fairway Market, the Official Fuel of SPIN-O 2012.  Enjoy organic fresh fruit, freshly baked muffins and bagels, gogurt, pb&j sandwiches, pinwheel sandwiches and side salads!  Hydrate with Steaz, Poland Spring & Honest Tea and other drinks while quantities last for riders and volunteers.  Feel free to bring your small snacks and sports drinks if there is one that works best for you.   Filtered water fountains are available and encouraged.  FAIRWAY MARKET’s catered food should be eaten in the refreshments area only and not in other areas of the event floor.

10.  Can I change clothes and shower at the event?  What about toilets?

Given the hundreds of participants, lockers, showers and changing facilities are extremely limited.   Come dressed in your workout clothes and expect to leave that way. Please use the Port-O-Johns instead of any of the toilets in the building.

11.  What should I do after I workout?

There are 10 minute breaks for all activities  at 10:50 - 11:00 AM, 11:50 - Noon,
12:50 – 1:00 PM and 1:50 – 2;00 PM.   After Herman at 9:00 — there is also a break 9:50 – 10:00.    Riders ride straight from 9:00 - 10:50 the first two hours.

Visit the American Cancer Society researchers in the SPIN-O Village and our dedicated medical professionals from Norwalk Hospital!

Wipe down your bike when you leave if you are not riding 6 hours
and welcome the new rider!

Hydrate and eat.

Free massages will also be available behind the bike court for everyone, next to Pam Einarsen Photography http://pamelaeinarsenphotography.com/special/

If you have not already picked up your goodie bag, please do so and drive home safely!  You will need to show your name badge to receive a goodie bag.

If you can stay after the event, please help clean up.
  Your assistance would be very welcome.  Or come back 5:00 - 6:30 pm and help.

12.  What about cell phone, pager, and beeper use?

 Please turn off all cell phones, two-way pagers and beepers during the rides.   If you need to have your cell phone with you, please set it to vibrate, not ring.  If using a cell phone, please leave the bike area and make your call from the fitness floor or elsewhere outside of earshot of the cycling area.   Note that communication devices may not work everywhere in the facility.

13.  What if I registered and cannot attend that day?

If you are unable to attend the event, please contact us at  203.767.3778 as soon as possible so we can release your bike to someone on our waiting list or walk-ins.  Sorry but registration fees are not refundable. 

14.   Is the event non-smoking?  YES!

15.  Will there be day care or babysitting available? 

NO -  Please do not leave children unattended.

3. FREE training starts this week for registered riders!

In February JoyRide in Westport will be having some free 3 hour training sessions on Sunday Feb 5 (SuperBowl) & 19 and you'll be able to sign up online at www.joyridewestport.com and the Y will host Feb 12 and 26th.

CHARITY TREKS • • • Our sister outdoor ride in August! 
1.  Money Raised

Over 700 participants and 100+ volunteers gathered Sunday, March 6 at INTENSITY in Norwalk and Studio M Dance & Fitness in Norwalk for a magical & inspirational 12th SPINODYSSEY! 


At 3PM on Sunday, March 6 we announced $434,000+ was raised for American Cancer Society Breast Cancer Research and national breast cancer clinical trials in Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.


An additional $22,00 from the Silent Auction, SPINODYSSEY STORE, hats, bottle, t-shirt, jersey sales & wine tasting, was given to Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital to support breast cancer research.

This $456,000 is a big jump from the $410,000 in 2011! 
And more is still coming in!
 

That puts SPINODYSSEY raising almost $3 million in 12 years!
Great job to all of you!!


We also will have money from registration fees, after paying the event expenses such as insurance, police, staging, sound system, etc. to give to Whittingham Cancer Center and ACS for breast cancer research!  That amount will be announced in another newsletter.

Stay tuned for the newsletter about the researcher we are funding with the 2011 Spin-O dollars!

Owner Jordy Scott for years has sponsored and ridden in SpinO with his sister and wife and has raised money as a member of the Wilton Y Team the past 8 years and this year sent a team.   He supplies us with trucks and drivers and manpower all weekend for whatever SpinO needs i.e., schlepping bikes and things to storage.  AND, over the past 8 years besides trucks and drivers they donated the beautiful trees with pink lights at the stage . . . Thank You Glen Gate!

6. Volunteers!

Simply put, without our volunteers, the event would not have been possible. Each of you has been an integral part of what makes SPINODYSSEY so special year after year.

And let’s not forget the Staples High School Football Team that set-up Friday night in another record 50 minutes---a job that used to take four hours!  Breakdown again was three hours ahead of schedule due to their non-stop manpower along with the Staples H.S. Girls Golf Team!  The guys are key to the set up Friday & Saturday and breakdown Sunday the past 6 years!   In prior years SPIN-O organizers would not finish cleanup until 10PM Sunday and this year we were out of the building by 6:45 PM!  Thank you to the Staples H.S. Cheerleaders who performed with Terri, Joyce and Jenna the last hour, too!  AND the Norwalk  H.S. Baseball Team stepped up and volunteered
at the
Zumba Marathon!

The nonprofit that SPINODYSSEY operates under is www.charitytreks.org. Fred Ury is one of the co-founders of The Trek and is in the Band DNR that played at SPINODYSSEY!  Check out www.charitytreks.org  and read about the outdoor ride he organizes that is the sister to SPINODYSSEY.  It is Burlington, VT to Portland, ME in August, and 100% of the donations help the research for the AIDS Vaccine being developed at UCLA AIDS Institute and Emory Vaccine Center.
